Ballantine’s Hard Fired is named as such because it has been finished in hard-fired barrels, obviously. If you’re unsure of what that means, allow me to educate you on this specific process. First, whisky is removed whisky from second-fill American oak barrels for no longer than a day, so the oak doesn’t dry out. The hard-firing follows, and gives the barrels a heavy char, before they are refilled with the same blend of whisky for several months.
Nose: Almost a burnt wholemeal toast aroma, just like your dad makes it. Slight floral flutter in the background, while tangy clementines, red apples and dried autumnal leaves all come to the fore gradually.
Palate: A good balance of flavour, vanilla is immediately obvious, but doesn’t dominate. Baking spices, ginger and cinnamon rise confidently through bonfire smoke. Tart liquorice threatens to emerge but is eclipsed by fudge and buttery biscuit.
Finish: A long finish, with a silky, warm feel and an ashy quality.
